European Union in Morocco Engages in a Coffee Talk in Berkane: Diving into the Heart of the Cultural Industry

On Friday, December 1st, the Complexe Majal Berkane for Innovation and Territorial Intelligence hosted a unique cultural event. Cultural stakeholders came together for a "Coffee Talk," an initiative organized by the European Union in Morocco under the EU Jeel ØŽŲŠŲ„ connect project. This event brought together a dynamic group of young people and cultural associations.

Exploring the Future: El Kaoutar Students Dive into Innovation at Majal Berkane

On Wednesday, November 23rd, students from the private institution El Kaoutar embarked on an exciting journey into the heart of innovation and territorial intelligence by visiting the Majal Berkane complex. This educational initiative, focused on digital technology and artificial intelligence, allowed students to get a firsthand look at how these technological advancements are transforming and enhancing life in the city of Berkane.

The visit provided a captivating immersion into a range of innovative projects initiated by the teams at Majal Berkane, positioning the city at the forefront of the digital revolution.

  1. Intelligent Traffic Management: Students had the opportunity to explore the behind-the-scenes of the "Intelligent Traffic Management" project. They discovered how cutting-edge technologies are used to regulate traffic flow, minimize congestion, and optimize movement within the city. This initiative demonstrated how technology can be a powerful tool for improving urban mobility
  2. Electric Charging Stations: The transition to more sustainable mobility was highlighted with the "Electric Charging Stations" project. Students were able to understand how Berkane is actively promoting electric vehicles by facilitating access to convenient charging points, thus contributing to a more environmentally friendly city.
  3. Berkane We Can: The visit also shed light on the community project "Berkane We Can." Students explored how technology is used as a catalyst to mobilize the local community. Online platforms encourage citizen participation, thereby strengthening Berkane's social fabric.
  4. Tech Center: The Tech Center, a true epicenter of innovation, captured the students' imagination. This research and development space is dedicated to creating innovative solutions. Students had the opportunity to engage with passionate professionals and discover the latest technological advancements.
  5. Incubation Center: The visit concluded at the Incubation Center, a space dedicated to supporting local start-ups. Students met dynamic entrepreneurs and understood how Majal Berkane encourages the creation of innovative businesses, nurturing the city's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Glow of Independence: Celebration and Recognition at the Al-Fadl Center for Human Development in Berkane

On the memorable occasion of the glorious Independence Day, the Al-Fadl Center for Human Development in Berkane organized, on November 18th, an event of recognition graced by the distinguished presence of Mr. Mohamed Ali Habouha, Governor of the Province of Berkane, and Mr. Mohammed Jelloul, President of the Provincial Council. Also present were the presidents of the various municipalities of the Berkane province, educational executives, and the parents of the beneficiaries, all gathered to celebrate the completion of the trainees' period of training.

The center, dedicated to human development, currently has 317 beneficiaries and 50 trainees, specializing in various fields such as hairdressing, cooking, sewing, and carpentry. Its commitment is to ensure the continuity of youth education, empower them to access the job market, while contributing to the reduction of both material and moral violence. The Second Chance program of the New Generation represents an educational product with comprehensive qualifications.

Governor Mohammed Ali Habouha played a crucial role in the development of the center by giving it attention, affection, and support. Similarly, the president of the provincial council made significant contributions by providing various services, including the installation of solar energy and the construction of three sections. Benefactors also played a commendable role, and the praiseworthy efforts of the educational executives were particularly highlighted.

The ceremony was marked by the presentation of certificates and awards by the governor to the graduates of the 2023/2022 group, also known as the Independence group. A symbolic celebration of the success of the trainees and the dedication of all stakeholders involved in this innovative project.

The transmission of knowledge thus becomes an essential lever for progress, creating an ecosystem where education and research harmoniously converge. This promising approach strengthens Berkane's social and economic fabric, placing education as a cornerstone of sustainable development.

In this perspective, the seminar titled "AIOT-Enhanced Ecofarming with ESKE: an Environmental Solution for Knowledgeable Ecofarming," led by Dr. Zakaria CHAROUH, Director of the Innovation Lab at Majal Berkane for innovation and territorial intelligence, is part of the "Precision Agriculture" module. The ESKE project aims to promote sustainable agriculture and inclusive local growth, thus ensuring efficient resource management. This initiative is based on the integration of advanced technologies related to the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence (AIoT), allowing for complete automation of the irrigation process to provide farmers with advanced and affordable technology, ensuring economical use.

This initiative embodies a bold approach by the leaders of the Berkane territory and the local development company Majal Berkane, seeking to leverage technological advancements for the benefit of the territory. It involves a dedicated and multidisciplinary team specializing in AIoT, environment, agriculture, and social sciences. With the ultimate goal of scaling the project to a larger extent, the ESKE program is committed to promoting sustainable development while maintaining an economical and accessible approach for local farmers.

Berkane's Participation in the International Conference on Future Services and Industry in Rabat

The International Conference on Future Services and Industry (ICSIF) 2023, held in Rabat on October 25th, proved to be an essential platform for communication among experts, researchers, academics, and industry professionals worldwide. The fundamental objective of this conference was to explore the latest trends and developments within the future industry while fostering the exchange of ideas, research, and practical experiences in various specialized fields.

The thematic axes of the conference covered a range of future technologies such as robotics, augmented reality, the Internet of Things, blockchain, and artificial intelligence. Special attention was given to the impact of these technologies on industrial operations, as well as on the fourth industrial revolution sector, emphasizing its implications for infrastructure, environment, efficiency, and competitiveness.

Dr. Zakaria Charouh, Director of Innovation Lab at Majal Berkane, was invited as a representative of the Berkane province in the fields of artificial intelligence and digital creation. This invitation stemmed from his significant contribution to several projects aimed at the development of the territory, including the E-Moulouya project.

The conference also highlighted case studies illustrating successful applications of the future industry while exploring best practices for its implementation and integration into industrial operations. Enhanced Partnership between Saint Gilles and Berkane through New Concrete Projects

As part of the partnership between the municipality of Berkane and that of Saint Gilles, a delegation from the latter recently visited several establishments and projects located in the territory of Berkane.

Under the leadership of Mr. Jean Sapinette, Mayor of the municipality of Saint Gilles, along with elected officials and department heads of the municipality, the delegation had the opportunity to visit various associations, cooperatives, the Academy of Sports Renaissance, as well as Majal Berkane for innovation and territorial intelligence, in addition to the municipal and provincial councils of Berkane.

This visit allowed for the discovery of the numerous agricultural, touristic, and economic potentials of the territory, while highlighting remarkable advancements in the field of digitalization and artificial intelligence. The projects presented during the visit offer intelligent and effective solutions for environmental protection, such as the E-Moulouya Project, BHAS, which aims to facilitate the treatment of stray dogs, as well as the integrated communal geographic information system and fire prevention solutions.

This initiative is part of a comprehensive partnership between Saint Gilles and Berkane aimed at strengthening social, cultural, and sports ties. This partnership emphasizes concrete support for women's qualification centers managed by the municipality of Berkane, with the aim of enhancing their economic capacities and fostering their social integration. Awareness on Energy Efficiency in the Hotel Industry: Promising Workshops in the Province of Berkane

A series of workshops aimed at promoting energy efficiency in the hotel sector have recently animated the tourist regions of Morocco. Organized by the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development as well as GIZ, these workshops took place this time in the Province of Berkane, specifically in the tourist city of Saidia.
The workshops were attended by Mr. Governor Mohamed Ali HABOUHA, Ms. Leila BENALi, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, as well as a plethora of speakers and stakeholders.

Energy efficiency of buildings represents a crucial element in the overall strategy to reduce energy consumption while ensuring a satisfactory level of comfort. In Morocco, the energy consumption of buildings accounts for 33.6% of the Total Final Energy Consumption (TFEC), with 25.4% attributable to the residential sector and 8.2% to the tertiary sector. Thus, the building sector ranks second in terms of energy consumption in the country. With the hotel industry representing 40% of energy consumption in the tertiary sector, it is imperative to implement measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in this domain.

The objective of this initiative was to raise awareness among participants about the importance of energy efficiency in tourist establishments, highlighting its economic and environmental impact. Moreover, these workshops provided valuable information on financing mechanisms tailored to energy efficiency projects in the tourism sector.

The program of this event offered a rich and complementary range, including testimonials and presentations focused on the regulatory and normative framework, as well as on technical and financial support opportunities.

The First Citizen Workshop in Berkane Territory on Citizen Participation

In the premises of Majal Berkane for Innovation and Territorial Intelligence, the first citizen workshop on citizen participation took place, facilitated by experts from the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council in the presence of Mr. Ahmed Reda CHAMI, president of the council, Mr. Mohamed Ali HABOUHA, Governor of the Province of Berkane, Mr. Mohammed JELLOUL, President of the Provincial Council, as well as representatives of local authorities from various municipalities.

The Economic, Social, and Environmental Council is an independent constitutional institution tasked with advisory missions. It issues opinions, suggestions, and recommendations on major development options, public policies in economic, social, and environmental areas, as well as on the general orientations of the national economy and sustainable development.

In addition to its advisory role, the Council addresses numerous crucial issues for the future of our country or important social issues for young people to ensure the effectiveness of rights and to enhance public debates on decision-making and the promotion of a culture of dialogue and modern values.

In line with these orientations and missions, the council has chosen the Berkane territory as a privileged location to create constructive dialogue with the province's stakeholders through the organization of the 1st citizen workshop on the theme of citizen participation. More than 80 associations operating in the fields of environment, digital transition, education, cooperatives, and young project leaders, all responded to the organizers' invitation with the aim of presenting their aspirations and suggestions based on a thorough understanding of the specificities of the field and the domain they represent.

A fruitful exchange took place among the various involved and participating parties in this event, demonstrating both the richness and societal commitment of Berkane's associative fabric, and the CESE's mobilization towards this element which holds special importance in construction and development, namely: Civil Society.

Suggestions and discussions primarily focused on strengthening democratic participation tools, connectivity, creating and implementing platforms for people with reduced mobility, establishing a regional and local climate fund... as well as an interesting array of suggestions and aspirations that will serve as an important working basis for the opinion currently being developed by the CESE on "tools for citizen participation: strengthening their appropriation and extending their contributions to public decision-making."
